Tony Afonso represents leading financial and investment firms, real estate developers and government entities in all areas of commercial and public finance.
Tony is known for forging innovative partnerships and inventive solutions sensitive to competing objectives. He has been involved in many of the pivotal projects that shape Rhode Island’s infrastructure… the Providence Place Mall, McCoy Stadium, T.F. Green Airport, and the Dunkin Donuts Center.
Tony joined forces with long-time colleague Tom Moses in 1997 to create Moses & Afonso. Previously, he was a principal at the predecessor firms to Tillinghast Licht for seven years. His finance career began in banking as general counsel to Old Stone Mortgage Corporation in Washington state, and then as senior vice president and general counsel to Old Stone Bank in Providence.
Tony has served as general counsel to the Rhode Island Health and Educational Building Corporation since 1998. He has represented many departments of state government including the Rhode Island Industrial Facilities Corporation and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation.
Tony is a board member of the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership, the Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center and a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers. He recently completed four years of service as a municipal court judge for the town of Cumberland.
Tony is a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University and a cum laude graduate of Suffolk University Law School. He earned a master’s degree in taxation from Boston University School of Law.
